Aizu Flat

Lacquerware

Aizu flat is the lunch plate with “Hana-nuri coating”, which is a lacquering technique unique to Aizu tableware. Our skillful coating-master Mr. Furukawa Katsunori uses this “Hana-nuri” technique and creates a mirror-like surface without polishing it. To accentuate its black mirror beauty from the Hana-nuri surface, Aizu flat keeps the formation simple. By using the deep-black 24cm square plate as its primary piece, you can add other plates of; different sizes, heights, colors, and materials. A couple of plates put together would be used as a personal plate, and all ten plates put together can be used as a party plate. If you fill the table with more plates, it would be one gigantic plate where you would not be able to differentiate the line between yours and theirs. Find ways to enjoy the plate according to the menu and company.
In Japan, lacquered tableware is traditionally used at New Year’s and for celebration banquets. Aizu flat will make a nice addition to create the table more colorful and lift your spirit up on these special occasions.

In Japan, there is a technique ‘repairing for good’ called ‘kintsugi’, old Japanese art form of repairing broken ceramics in a way that is often considered more beautiful than when it was whole. ‘kintsugi’ is not only the technique, but also a true celebration of traditional Japanese beauty, the aesthetic of broken, old or disregarded. Thus, it is considered that ‘kintsugi’ is very congratulatory gift because pieces are stuck together and won’t come apart. A design of ‘HIBITSUGI’ take advantage of such ‘kintsugi’, and it is a product with the aesthetic and technique of Japanese tradition. We hope ‘HIBITSUGI’ will expand the utilizing and expectation of wood with beautiful technique and value, and be enjoyed for a long life.
