木×○○=木の可能性を広げるエシカルなプロダクト

In recent years, extreme weather events such as scorching heat waves
and heavy rainfall have become increasingly severe.
One of the major factors behind this phenomenon
is believed to be global warming caused by CO2 emissions.

Around the world, various environmentally conscious initiatives
are being promoted under the philosophy of the SDGs.
In Japan, efforts in fields such as forest conservation
and the revitalization of the forestry industry
have been making significant strides,
particularly in the upcycling of thinned wood and wood scraps.
Moving forward, even more innovative ideas and approaches are expected.

This time, we focus on “wood” as a material.
Wood has long been deeply connected to human life
and will continue to be an essential part of our existence.
We want to take a fresh look at the possibilities of coexisting with wood.
By combining “wood” with “〇〇,” new possibilities emerge,
leading to ethical product designs that enrich people’s lives.

I made a "pin" thinking about whether I could assemble wood with only balloons.
It was named pin with the meaning of "pin" in Japanese and pin = fixed in English.
The way to assemble it is simple: put wood in the balloon, inflate it, and deflate it.
A different, indescribable adorable form is created every time.
It can use the force generated when the balloon shrinks to fix the wood inside.
In other words, it can be assembled without the use of glue, and the friction of the rubber supports the floor and the top plate without slipping.

Few chairs are made of needle leaf.
Reason, the softness of needle leaf is a disadvantage
The softness felt from needle leaf is
disadvantage, but an advantage, even if it is a chair.
The back of the chair can be treated as an advantage.
By alternating slits in the back and front, the wood can be bent
There are few products that use this technique.
Even if there are, softness is often lost.
For soft seating comfort, researching the pitch and length of the slits, we created a chair that combines the workability of red pine with its softness.
A chair was created that felt like sitting on a piece of square timber, as if you were sitting on a piece of rubber
Using the technique of wood and slit, wood
The aim of this project was to draw out the potential of wood and to promote the use of wood and the value of its use.

MAGE FAN

fan

With the techniques of traditional Japanese crafts, we can once again move people's hearts and bring love to their lives.

MAGE FAN is a fan that uses the techniques of the traditional Japanese craft of "magemono".

The iconic design, achieved by dynamically bending thin cypress boards, impresses with the "flexibility of bent wood". The soft, comfortable natural breeze of MAGE FAN gently stimulates people's five senses. Even when not in use as a fan, it has a special presence as an interior piece that allows you to enjoy the warmth of natural wood and the changing texture that occurs with use.

We have created new possibilities for "magemono", a craft that has been a part of people's lives since ancient times.

Curved tools have supported the lives of Japanese people since ancient times. It has been a long time since these things, which were once commonplace, have ceased to be a ``normal'' part of life as the times have changed. However, the craft of handicraft has been passed down to the present day, and the charm of wooden tools made using traditional methods remains unchanged. An unchanging charm in the hands of someone who lives today. It blends into everyday life, makes each day a little bit richer, and stays close to the user for a long time. We continue to make such tools.

RE:

In response to the theme of “ethical products that expand the possibilities of wood,” we did not consider eco-friendliness as a value in itself, but rather the design that combines aesthetic value as the essential value of ethical products. Beautiful designs are loved by people and used for a long time, extending the life of products and reducing waste and unnecessary consumption. We believed that the combination of ecology and aesthetic value is what will lead to the realization of an ethical and sustainable society, and we sought to find a way to make products that are both.
In addition, the difference between products and art lies in reproducibility. We thought that planer shavings, which are produced in factories using electric planes, have a certain standard and are therefore a material that has a high affinity with products. Therefore, we created three lighting works that beautifully express the lightness and fragility of planer shavings as a form, taking advantage of their thinness and softness.
Through these works, we propose new possibilities for wood as a material.

KNIT

Wall shelf, light fixture, basket

Familiar everyday knitted items such as wire netting, bamboo baskets, and woolen sweaters are lightweight, durable, and long-lasting. We propose a product that combines knitting and wood, which can change its function and form depending on the material it is woven from. Knit is a wooden mesh shelf made by weaving 6φ curved wood. The curved wood is a technique of forming wood into curved lines by steaming and bending it, which allows the use of wood without wasting it compared to the process of cutting it.
Knit is composed of four screws and curved wood parts. The structure of a wire mesh is used to weave together the peaks and valleys of the curved wood parts, which are then screwed to the wall surface to form a sturdy, rigid, and motionless wood mesh shelf.

Bow stool

chair

The bow stool is a fusion of traditional Japanese floor seating culture and the bending process pattern. The bending process allows the seat to bend flexibly, providing a soft cushioning effect. The stool features two types of bending patterns: triangular and spiral, which allows even hard materials to bend softly.

Floor seating, is a deeply rooted culture in Japanese life, and has supported a time of relaxation on tatami mats. The bow stool naturally fits to the movement of the sitter and provides comfortable seating.

The bow stool, which connects tradition and innovation, brings a new level of comfort to people's lives around the world.

wood gems nail

nail tip

Wood reborn as "gems" for nails.
I make nail tips from leftover wood. I cut and polish the wood.
This makes each nail tip special, like a gemstone.

I designed the nail tips to highlight the unique features of each type of wood. Wear these nails for special days. Pay attention to the color and pattern of each piece of wood.

I value every piece of wood. I want to show that wood is a treasure from nature.
I hope wood can be used for more than building, like in fashion. These nail tips are a stylish way to see new uses for wood.

Kumiko Ema

Ema

How should traditional techniques be handed down to the future as our lifestyles change with the times?
Japanese “Kumiko” craftsmanship has been handed down since the Asuka Period. Its beautiful geometric patterns are meant to ward off evil spirits, to pray for good fortune, and to bring good luck.
However, this tradition is in danger of dying out due to a decrease in the number of craftsmen and a decline in demand.
In Japan, there is a culture of “ema” (votive tablet), in which people pray for their wishes and dedicate them to shrines.
I focused on the meaning of “kumiko” in terms of “marriage” and “prayer” and thought of a way to connect to the future in a new way by combining with this culture.
This is the “Kumiko Ema”.
By assembling the Kumiko and writing a wish on it, you can experience “giving shape to your wishes while feeling the tradition.
The completed Kumiko Ema will be dedicated to a Japanese shrine after the exhibition.
The wishes written in Milan will be connected to Japan, and the wood will play a new role as a “medium to carry culture”.
